Santiago’s name is derived from the biblical figure St James. It’s the capital city and the cultural and financial centre of Chile. At 5.5 million people, it is also one of the largest cities in all the Americas.
Founded in 1541, this colonial city sits on the Mapocho river and is nearly surrounded by the Andes Mountains. Its protected position in the bottom of the Chile’s Central Valley intensifies its considerable smog problem. Despite its congestion, Santiago charmed us with its intriguing mix of antique colonial and modern comforts.
